In recognition of the fact that stringed instruments are particularly difficult to play at the early stages, less emphasis will be placed on competitive spirit and more on the enjoyment of performance, with constructive comments.
STRINGS – GENERAL RULES
THE CORIN LONG STRING AWARDS:
A Bursary up to the value of £500 to a Double Bass or Cello player of 17 years or under who would benefit from financial help.
Prizes of £200 and £50 and the Corin Long Festival Cup will be awarded in the Recital Class

THE BRIGHTON PHILARMONIC ORCHESTRA AWARD: 2 tickets for the BPO 2011 / 2012 concert season to be awarded to the most outstanding String Concerto performer who lives in Sussex. See pages the end of this section and the Concerto section for details.
The Roedean Cup will be awaded to the performer with the highest mark within any class and any section within the Festival.

These classes are intended for the enjoyment of performance. Constructive comments will be given but no marks awarded. These classes are open to any stringed instrument. ONE piece only. Pieces presented in these classes may NOT be played in any other strings class at this festival.

Entrants in these classes should be working for the stated grade or entering for that grade in the spring term. They must not have passed the grade examination at the time of entry. This section is now divided into three for different instruments.

Corin Long was Principal Bass of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and taught at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music. These awards are to help promising young string players to further their careers.
The Corin Long Bursary, up to the value of £500, will be awarded to the Double bass or Cello player of 17 years or under who, in the opinion of the adjudicator, shows exceptional promise and would benefit from financial support.
This money is to go towards further study or instrument purchase. If you are 17 or under and would like to apply for a Bursary, enter any class/es for Double Bass or Cello for your age range. You will need to complete an application form which you can obtain from the Festival Administrator, Madeleine Turner. Please contact her by 1 February 2012.
Performers should select two pieces, lasting between 8 and 15 minutes, contrasting in style or period, and prepare a short verbal introduction to the works they are going to perform.
Choice of programme will be taken into consideration.

Any two stringed instruments, piano accompaniment allowed (pianist not judged), Single or Double Concertos allowed. These will be judged on the standard of ensemble playing and on evidence of listening to each other rather than the difficulty of the music performed.

Open to any string instrument to perform unaccompanied Bach. Two movements from any Sonata, Partita, or Suite, unless playing a substantial movement, in which case one movement is acceptable. Please check with the String Secretary if unsure.

There will be an award of £25 for the most enjoyable performance of each class.
These will be judged on the standard of ensemble playing and on evidence of listening to each other rather than the difficulty of the music performed. There will be a brief coaching session with the adjudicator.
From 3 instruments (any type) of which one must be a stringed instrument, for example the ensemble may have a combination of piano, woodwind or brass with a stringed instrument. For the purposes of Springboard Festival, Chamber Music is defined as those works for three or more players, one person per part and non-directied. Performances of concertos are not acceptable within the Chamber Music Classes and the performance of the ensemble as a whole will be adjudicated. Professionals may not participate.

Music teachers and professional musicians may take part provided they do not play the instrument for which they have been professionally trained. Minimum of two related players; unrelated players not to outnumber related players; to include at least one string player.
Award: As this is intended to be a light hearted class humorous prizes will be awarded to the first three places. Time limit: 10 minutes
Everyone who has taken part in a string class is invited to join in an hour-and-a-half workshop taken by Daniel Bhattacharya and Richard May which will culminate in a public performance. The works to be played will be the Purcell Chacony and a movement from a Vivaldi Cello Concerto. All levels of Festival performers can join in this piece. Parents and teachers are also welcome!
Free entry. Please indicate on the entry form if you want to take part, state your instrument and bring a stand with you on the day.
An expert in Alexander Technique will be present for half a day to discuss the method and show some hands on approaches for participants to try under supervision.
All works are own choice and should be the first or last movement of a concerto or a piece with orchestra of similar stature for any stringed instrument. Two contrasting movements from a baroque concerto are also acceptable. Both solo and double works are welcome.
There are no time limits but please state on your entry which work will be performed with approximate timing.
Only the performances of the soloist(s) will be adjudicated. Orchestral parts must be played as a piano arrangement; this may be played by a professional.
The winner and runner-up in each class (if awarded 90 marks or more) will be invited to play again in the Concerto Performance Day which will be Sunday 18 March. Outstanding performances on this day may be offered the chance to appear as soloist with the Brighton Youth Orchestra during the 2012/13 Season.
