There will be two trophies, one to be awarded by each adjudicator, to the two players showing the most musical potential.

  1. OWN CHOICE
    1. In own choice classes, only one piece to be played unless otherwise stated (as in Classes 215, 232, Recital and Duet classes).
    2. An Own Choice piece may be used only once in the Festival (except when used in the Final of the Junior or Senior Championship).
    3. Jazz and arrangements from shows will only be accepted in classes 218, *243 – *246. Music by composers such as Gershwin and Mayerl, however, will be accepted in other Own Choice classes. If in doubt, please contact the Piano Secretary.
  2. REPEATS ARE NOT REQUIRED – unless stated in the syllabus
  3. GRADING OF PIECES. Where a grading requirement is set, the Adjudicator’s decision as to the acceptability of the standard of the performer’s chosen piece will in all cases be final.

The Roedean Cup will be awaded to the performer with the highest mark within any class and any section within the Festival.

PIANO CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Championship Classes (MARKED WITH * IN THE SYLLABUS) may be entered individually by those who do not wish to compete for the Championships but who fulfil the age and repertoire requirements.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

As the Winner you will hold the EDWARD PAXTON WHITE MEMORIAL CUP

for one year and receive a prize of £50. If you are placed second you will receive a prize of £25. The cash prizes are presented by an anonymous donor.

If you are between 10 and 14 years of age wishing to compete for the Junior Championship you should enter, according to your age group, three of the following classes:

Bach (*229, *230), Sonatina /Sonata (*233, *234,), Romantic Period to 1975(*237, *238), Junior Recital (*247) Contemporary (*241), and Jazz (*243, *244).

You may enter more than three championship classes and, if you do so, your three highest marks will be added together for your final total.

The six performers gaining the highest total marks, and having gained a minimum of 240 marks, will be eligible to play in the Junior Championship Final which will be held on SUNDAY 11 March 2012. If you qualify for the Junior Final you should be prepared to play three works, one each from the classes in which you gained your qualifying marks. If one of the classes is the Junior Recital, then only one piece from that class should be selected for the Final. Consideration will be given to the variety and balance in your choice of programme. At least one piece must be performed from memory.

 

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

As the Winner you will hold the EUROPEAN PIANO TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP for one year and receive a prize of £100. If you are placed second you will receive a prize of £50. The cash prizes are presented by an anonymous donor.

If you are between 15 and 19 years of age wishing to compete for the Senior Championship you should enter, according to your age group, three of the following classes:

Bach (*231/*232), Sonata (*235/*236), Romantic Period to 1975 (*239/*240), Senior Recital (*248), Contemporary (*242) and Jazz (*245/*246).

You may enter more than three championship classes and, if you do so, your three highest marks will be added together for your final total.

The six performers gaining the highest total marks, and having gained a minimum of 240 marks, will be eligible to play in the Senior Championship Final which will be held on SUNDAY 18 MARCH 2012. If you qualify for the Senior Final you should be prepared to play three works, one each from the classes in which you gained your qualifying marks. (NB This does not apply to the

Bach Class *232, where both Prelude and Fugue or both Suite or Partita movements should be played in the Final). If one of the classes is the Senior Recital, then only one piece from that class should be selected for the Final.

*248 Senior Recital 15 – 22 years £15.00
  Performers to select two or three contrasting pieces from any period - the programme to last not less than 8 minutes and not more than 15 minutes. At least one piece to be played from memory. Choice of programme will be taken into consideration. This is a qualifying class for the Senior Championship.
Award: First Prize of £100 and a Festival Medal.
Second Prize of £50.
 

 

CONCERTO CLASSES

All works are own choice and should be the first or last movement of a concerto or a piece with orchestra of similar stature.

There are no time limits but please state on your entry which work will be performed with approximate timing.

Only the performances of the soloist will be adjudicated. Orchestral parts must be played as a piano arrangement; this may be played by a professional.

The winner and runner-up in each class (if awarded 90 marks or more) will be invited to play again in the Concerto Performance Day which will be Sunday 18 March. Outstanding performances on this day may be offered the chance to appear as soloist with the Brighton Youth Orchestra during the 2012/13 Season.

251 New Class - Be the Adjudicator

For this non-competitive, fun class, the adjudicator will become the performer and you can have the chance to make the comments! The class will be designed to help young players to make constructive comments about public performance and presentation skills. There is no entry fee - just include this class on the entry form. Maximum number of entrants: 10. There will be a small prize for all participants.

 

CHAMBER MUSIC and ENSEMBLES

Pianists can combine with String, Woodwind or Brass players to take part in Workshops, Competitive and Non-Competitive Classes in the Strings and Woodwind & Brass Sections. See those Sections for full details.
